New DORMA eLearning site offers continuing education credits for architects, others

REAMSTOWN, Pa. (April  16, 2010) – DORMA Architectural Hardware’s new “DORMA eLearning” site — www.DORMAe-learning.com — offers a convenient, online platform for learning about architectural hardware and obtaining continuing education credits through the American Institute of Architects (AIA). DORMA is a registered provider with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems, All courses meet health, safety, welfare and sustainable design requirements.

Successful completion of each 45- to 60-minute program will earn architects one LU toward maintaining their certification as a registered architect. Earned credits will be reported automatically to AIA’s CES records. Certificates of completion will be mailed to AIA members as well. Non-AIA members can receive certificates upon request for self reporting.

The classes provide essential information about architectural hardware to help the building team make informed decisions about product selection and performance. The programs are suitable for use by other members of the building team (including end-users) in addition to hardware sales representatives and distributors.

Two programs for AIA credit are available on the site now. DORMA plans to have eight credit programs available by year-end. In addition, a non-credit DORMA-specific class provides an overview of the company, its products and its services to familiarize the participant with the wealth of offerings available.

More from Dubai: a towering achievement for DORMA

Rising more than 2,700 feet and 160 floors, the Burj Khalifa, formerly Burj Dubai, is the world’s tallest building and represents one of the largest orders ever fulfilled by DORMA Group North America operations.

More than 16,000 pieces of hardware—including hydraulic door closers, exit devices and electrified ML Series Mortise Locks equip the nearly 12,000 doors in the building. DORMA products were specified in a $6.5 million deal forged in July 2004.

“The inclusion of DORMA hardware on this record-breaking structure is a testament to the quality and style our employees put into every product,” says Scott Duncan, President of DORMA Architectural Hardware, part of DORMA Group North America.

An impressive fireworks, laser and fountain display introduced the building, renamed after Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during inaugural proceedings Monday, January 4. About 90 percent of the tower’s luxury residences and offices have been sold. Additionally, the first Armani designed hotel and world’s highest observation deck will continue to attract visitors to the building and reassert a standard for progress in the Middle East for years to come.

More from Agion on antimicrobial treatments

Agion Technologies has issued a news release about its recent partnership with DORMA. Agion antimicrobial protection will be added as a coating option to DORMA’s existing family of exit devices, grade one locks and deadbolts to inhibit odor-causing microbial growth on the high touch surfaces allowing the hardware to meet the strict specifications for projects in which ultra-clean tactile surfaces are desired or necessary.

New antimicrobial protected coating option for DORMA locks, exit devices, trim ideal for ultra-clean environments and public venues

With the introduction of a new coating option featuring antimicrobial protection, several DORMA Architectural Hardware products can now meet the strict specifications for projects in which ultra-clean tactile surfaces are desired or necessary.

In environments such as healthcare facilities, educational institutions, food processing and manufacturing areas, public venues, office buildings, hotels, and restaurants, the new antimicrobial-protected coating can add an increased level of cleanliness due to its microbe growth-inhibiting properties.

DORMA’s CL800 Cylindrical, ML9000 Mortise and D800 Deadbolt lockset series offer the coating option on levers, roses, escutcheons, thumbturns, trim rings and cylinder face plates. For the DORMA family of exit devices, the coating is added to the touchbar, touchbar rail, chassis cover, end cap, surface vertical rods and latch covers, as well as to the following trim components: escutcheon, plate, rose, lever, knob, pull and thumbturn.

The clear-finish, antimicrobial-protected coating requires no additional prep considerations. An “AM” logo applied to each treated surface will assure end-users of the hardware’s antimicrobial features. Under DORMA’s warranty, antimicrobial-treated surfaces are protected for the life of the product provided coating remains on treated surfaces. Antimicrobial protection is limited to the treated article and does not protect a user against disease-causing bacteria.

The antimicrobial technology is an additive to the powder coating material used on the hardware. It is supplied by Agion Technologies, Wakefield, Mass., a recognized leader in the development of antimicrobial solutions for products ranging from door hardware to footwear. The Agion antimicrobial substance is registered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, United States Food and Drug Administration, and the United States Department of Agriculture as maintained by the National Sanitation Foundation.

For more information about the antimicrobial coating, contact DORMA Architectural Hardware at 1-800-523-8483 or visit www.dorma-usa.com

PA company to supply exit devices for world’s tallest building in Dubai

1-22-07 – PA company to supply exit devices for world’s tallest building in Dubai

REAMSTOWN, Pa. — Commercial door hardware products manufactured by DORMA Group North America (www.dorma-usa.com) will soon be headed to Dubai for use in the world’s tallest building: the Burj Dubai, which will tower more than 2,300 feet and 160 floors when completed in 2008.

The products include hydraulic door closers that will be manufactured locally in DORMA’s Reamstown facility. (Often mounted at the top of the door frame, door closers help control door speed when people open and close them.) DORMA will also supply locks and exit devices—the horizontal push bars that latch and unlatch doors—from its Steeleville, Ill., facility.

The $6.5 million order represents one of the largest in the history of the Ennepetal, Germany-based company and one of the largest fulfilled by DORMA Group North America operations, which traces its local roots back to 1851 in Reading.

Further, DORMA is optimistic the large order will be the first of several for this project, as the building has reached only about 1,100 feet—not even half—of the planned height.

“The inclusion of DORMA hardware on this record-breaking structure is a testament to the quality and style our employees put into every product,” says Scott Duncan, President of DORMA Architectural Hardware, part of DORMA Group North America.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the Burj Dubai will house a hotel, a large number of luxury apartments, and several office complexes. The building combines historical and cultural influences with cutting edge technology to achieve a high-performance structure that will set the new standard for development in the Middle East and become the model for the future of the city.

DORMA Architectural Hardware’s local manufacturing operation had its beginnings in 1851, when William Harbster opened a blacksmith shop in Reading, eventually producing locks, latches, hinges and a variety of other hardware items. This developed into what was known as the Reading Hardware Co., operating continuously for 99 years until manufacturing ceased in 1950 and the company was sold off in parcels.

The door check division, which began in 1875, was sold to Hardware Products Inc., a Reading company which acquired the name, patterns, and machinery and eventually changed its name to Reading Door Closer. Eventually the privately held company relocated to Reamstown, where it has been operating since. Germany-based DORMA bought the company in 1980. The company has expanded significantly since then through organic growth and the acquisition of other companies who make and service products in the architectural openings industry.

DORMA centralized the management of its North American operations in Reamstown in 2002 with the formation of DORMA Group North America
