DORMA receives iF and universal design awards

Integrated door closer and electronic door fitting awarded again.

Ennepetal. Following on from last year when DORMA received a number of major design honors, such as the Iconic Award or the German Design Award, further chapters are being added to the company’s success story on this front as we move through 2014. In fact, innovative DORMA products have garnered four international design awards within days of one another. The announcement of the iF design Awards and the Universal Design Awards has brought the company two successes from each awarding body.

In the conferral of the renowned iF product design awards, the ITS 96 FL integrated door closer received the coveted iF label. And the electronic door fitting XS Quattro was recognized with the highly prestigious iF gold award. From 3,249 product submissions, only 50 really special specimens were selected for honors. “This door fitting with its integral access control function has a particularly shallow, unobtrusive profile, despite offering all the features that, for example, might be expected in the hotel segment. Its size and the use of signal colors have been much reduced. The overall effect is therefore one of a product offering an impressively understated, high-precision design,” was the judgment of the international jury of experts following scrutiny of the XS Quattro and its contenders on the basis of criteria such as innovative content, material selection and functionality.

“Design & Aesthetics are among our core brand values, so we are, of course, particularly delighted to receive such a renowned design award,” commented Rainer Blank, Director Product & Design. And Mario Dreismann, Vice President Group Marketing & Sales, added: “For us good design is not regarded as an end in itself, however, but rather one element seen in association with technical innovation and, needless to say, high product quality. It is precisely this holistic approach that is recognized by the iF awards. So the accolade represents a particularly significant success in our view – one that inspires us going forward, confirming as it does our ability to successfully pursue and sensibly interweave our values.”
The iF awards have been honoring design excellence since 1953 and represent one of the biggest and most important international design competitions. Hence the iF label. Granted by the International Design Forum, is a seal of quality recognized around the world.

DORMA was also successful in the universal design awards. Here again, the jury of experts singled out the ITS 96 FL. The consumer panel was also impressed by the integrated door closer, leading to DORMA also receiving the Universal Award in the Consumer Favorite category. Instituted to honor outstanding product design, services, architecture, systems and processes, the internationally aligned Universal Design Awards were first conferred in 2008. With the advent of barrier-free access as a megatrend, the 2014 Universal Design Awards highlighted for the first time the value of integrated systems offering a cogent combination of design and application aptitude, engineering excellence and aftermarket services, thus incorporating criteria far beyond the mere design credentials of the products and architectures submitted. The entrants were assigned scores for wide-ranging and flexible applicability, simple and intuitive operability, safety, security and error tolerance, interculturality and cost efficiency.

“The fact that it was actually the users who decided on where the consumer award should go is, of course, a real feather in our cap,” said Dreismann. “We regularly survey our clients – that is to say B2B customers such as specifiers, planners and architects – but to get direct feedback like this from the people who actually use our solutions in the buildings is also very important – it makes the award all the more treasured in our eyes.”

Awarded DORMA products
For both products, these latest awards are not the first honors to go their way. Both the XS Quattro fitting and the ITS 96 FL door closer have garnered the Iconic Award of the German Design Council, and the German Design Award.

The ITS 96 FL integrated door closer offers operational convenience combined with simple styling. Thanks to its EASY OPEN technology, the opening resistance is kept low enough to allow effortless operation across the full age range of potential users. Rather than being automatically closed, the door remains freely operable, facilitating traffic flows, especially in heavily frequented areas. A self-powered lintel-mounted smoke detector reliably initiates safe closure in the event of symptoms of fire. And even after this, the door can continue to be opened to enable escape. As an integrated free-swing door closer, the ITS 96 FL is particularly suitable for barrier-free building and passive fire protection.

The XS Quattro product family encompasses a broad range of door fittings and locking cylinders, making the line exceptionally versatile. The XS Quattro design exhibits clearly defined, slender lines, with wireless installation ensuring a discrete appearance. As the shallowest product of its kind, the XS Quattro fitting is especially suited to prestigious builds. Despite its flat profile, this electronic door fitting with integral access control and card reader unites various functional attributes while also allowing space for all essential components. Now in an advanced state of development, the XS Quattro series is expected to be available on the market in the near future. In September it will be displayed for the first time at the Security trade show in Essen / Germany.
